The problem with many a newbie is that ‘learning all these languages,’ (despite working them out) is not enough. More and more I see this going on as being too much. Many people arrive at jobs with the attitude ‘I just know these things, anyway.’ Like, they either can do it—I don’t care if they do it well—or they couldn’t do it even if they wanted to. As with most arrogant ideas, it’s actually very arrogant to become so dependent on somebody else’s opinion.

I have yet to work for anyone who has zero experience with different languages, or even different cultures. How hard is that? Not impossible, but close. And the worst part is that they get to dictate what we can and cannot do. But what can someone do if they cannot communicate in their own language?

I like languages, and I am an Asian woman, and I enjoy the idea of learning them, because I also enjoy the idea of being understood. I would rather be thought cool than thought stupid, so that should tell you something. This makes me proud to be Asian, and that’s something I want to preserve. Well maybe the latter, but my pride is not the same as my intelligence. I just want to communicate and gain acceptance. Let me tell you why.

I was told by a scientist that, ‘We’ll be doing this for a long time. We will be ruling the world. So we won’t be ruled from without. Everything will be contained within our grasp.’ Does that ring true to you? What if we rule the world? Right now, the Earth’s resources are running low. But wouldn’t that mean that there are limits to our power? Seems like we would need to come up with some way of making sure that we are not starving.

This seems to be something which every other species fights over. Do other animals fight over the same thing? I still wonder how that’s accomplished.
