Kaepernick Caa

I'm still shaking, it's been three years since my first game at The Line in Portland and I don't recognize my own place. Not that I can afford to complain, of course, but every NFL starter has his own personal way of coming back after a bad outing. Was I so bad against the Panthers I was done for the season; was I so distracted with injuries that I completely forgot how a great throw can change a game; was I so banged up that I took a step back before I was able to make the field goal?

These are just some of the scenarios that played out last Sunday night. What happens next depends on what you focus on when watching those games. Will I get a full recovery? Will I get back on the same page with my football life? Will I become more interested in football? If you want to answer these questions, there is a chance you missed the big picture by not having your eye on the ball. Let's try to get back there. I'll give you a bullet-point list of what I looked like after the Panthers game.

1. Getting hurt. I'm not allowed to talk about this here, but I can guarantee you that it happened:

After getting two touches as part of the Wilson-Pena benching plan (see Week 1, Locker vs. Texans) I tore my ACL running 50-yard catch and pass while making a leap.

I finished the game with one catch for 7 yards and an 83-yard touchdown catch. I was asked why I didn't attack immediately. I responded that I was worried the play might develop into an injury and that trying to pass away that responsibility "makes me regret all the chances I had" and that I should be "relaxed."

My worst line going into the game was 79 yards and a TD (47 yards rushing, 27 yards passing), but I actually had a pretty good day. And if you watch the Broncos-Vikings game earlier that day, the idea that Eli Manning went down with an ankle injury makes more sense.

2. Being on the sideline for half the game. Early in the fourth quarter of that game, when the Colts managed to run out our playcalling, it was a head coach who thought he could just do whatever he wanted and get us off the ball. But then Brandon Weeden and Co.
