Cedric Favors Atlanta
By CBS Sports Staff, 05/19/2001
Atlanta won at Nashville; Atlanta is tied with a tiebreaker with New Orleans for first place in the NFC South. The rest of the division will be determined on Sundays.
The NFL on CBS is currently running a story previewing the NFC this weekend. I've included my interpretation of what to expect.
Here are my picks:
The New York Giants are the favorites to win the NFC East. While the Atlanta Falcons play the Pittsburgh Steelers, the New York Giants play the Philadelphia Eagles. The Giants boast a 9-5 record while the Eagles have a 5-9 record. The New York Giants have the easiest schedule of any team in the NFC this season.
Both teams beat up their opponents by an average margin of seven points or less. With a win over Dallas, the Giants could possibly win the NFC East, but the Eagles could actually make the playoffs. The Giants have the league's best pass defense and worst run defense. The Eagles have the league's second most balanced offense and worst defense.
Both teams are very thin at quarterback. However, Bill Parcells is sure to use Peyton Manning all year long, and Brian Westbrooks has been great as well. Michael Vick is never going to be there when he pitches his name from top to bottom, but he's still a complete player. Tim Tebow will have a chance to lead his team, but I don't see why anybody expects him to carry a game on his own. I can't see Parcells giving Tom Brady a chance even though the Giants have two more wins than the Patriots. Both offenses are consistently playing one dimensional football.
There is no way the Lions will be able to figure out what to do with Matthew Stafford, who has thrown 16 interceptions. How deep into the division does the Colts have to fall?
Of course, it would be foolish to bet against both the Giants and Eagles. And I realize that parity has been an advantage over the last eight years, but I simply don't trust either of those teams to do anything worth reading about this weekend.
The Rams, Saints and Panthers will probably take care of business on Sunday, but the Redskins and Jets aren't as good as they once were.
