Gerrod Miller
I know it has been a long wait for you all, and I know the world hasn't really gotten one of these things quite like I have. So, in honor of my fantastic new editor (and my best friend) Sara Aul, I thought I would pose five questions to her. The questions are in order of their importance, and I hope you don't think I'm doing her any favors here...
First, is there a reason, anywhere, that the first sentence of the novel isn't a whole lot longer than it needs to be? Do you prefer the shorter version?
My preference is actually why, right in the beginning, does Robert actually become a man and why doesn't he then, after many years, decide to change everything? I think it's interesting and I wanted to begin slow and even though we meet him around the end of the book, it makes what happens during the journey easier.
Second, do you think the title _Coming Home_ should have been a different one altogether? I meant to ask, if you have come up with a name for something, please do so or tell me about it.
Yes, I think the new title makes a lot more sense. Coming Home was a subgenre I had never tackled before, but that's what I thought when I saw it. Of course, I didn't mean the generic coming home way, but the idea of being "trampled on" by another, and the idea of "taking your child away from you" is much more action-packed. But yes, I've edited the title to imply as much already.
Third, do you think this novel has anything to do with my "Ghost Season" romance series? I usually love all your series, but this particular one has always struck me as a bit too much like "a movie where the monster comes back to life", no matter how accurate the descriptions may be at the end.
Actually, it's not nearly as much of a story. As stated above, the title came to me very quickly after reading the first two books in the series, which had a much greater impact on me. The goal was to craft a story that would be something special: a blockbuster zombie thriller set in North America. With the help of some gifted illustrators, I said, "This is the American Dream!
