_AUTHOR'S PREFACE._
These _memoirs_ are the self-revelations of a fascinating
individual. They illustrate and portray with unprecedented
pupilage her way in life and the little that was to be known about it.
The narrative is from real papers, and it shows the vital process by
which all her true nature was recorded, each detail exacted and studied
with painstaking care.
In looking back upon the twenty-year picture she may have seen herself
at twenty, or just five years older than when the manuscript was
conceived. It has not been possible for us to say who the author was.
Yet every man will understand more or less of what she wrote until
her dying day. Our feeling is that we must put aside, as unnecessary,
the belief that these are purely anachronistic documents and that they
would not please the intelligent, truthful reader. A passage from one
of them refers to a book which can prove very valuable to readers in
their after-life, if ever they are written again. But our time is
short--long enough not to waste it in the vain attempt to revive a
deformed but still human memory!
