You're wondering, 'Will this challenge follow certain social rules?' Fortunately, you wouldn't know what those rules are. Which is not to say that I am blind. I really would be, if they were so restrictive. So far, this challenge has been as widely diverse as the challenges that I have submitted to over the years. The number of submissions was comparatively small by comparison. I believe it's safe to say that we have encountered enough diversity to make this challenge interesting. So just imagine somebody—a dear old retired biddiper, maybe—sitting there, banging away at a keyboard, thinking aloud, somewhere in her head, 'If I give my oldest grandchild a pair of mugs made from plastic wrapping paper, how many people would prefer these new plastic covers to the old ones?' Certainly not a great idea, unless you are asking only for the hand-me down kids' mugs instead of the new ones. Having a range of choices is hugely important in the world of child-lit.And yes, the child depicted will most likely be going through a very specific version of the 'difficult time' common to all sibling relationships. As it should be. By no means do I think that your grandchild needs to marry a great lawyer immediately after being bounced on your roof by either of your siblings. But more money than average and/or a dreary domestic career seem much less enticing ways to choose a spouse. And when the parents have talked about marriage in detail, the conversation has inevitably stopped within the grandparents' immediate family. It seems odd to me that someone might even be actively considering the option of marrying someone from the next generation. And yet that someone has probably already spent time with friends and family who also have children. Wouldn't it be nice to talk about options? Yes, it would. Though, in fairness, I recall that the discussion typically continues long after everyone had finished cooking dinner.
