Two-day effort to find missing man identified

Pasadena, California

(Published June 29, 2000)

A $100 million state investigation launched by the California Highway Patrol (CHP) - a broad-based look at state agencies and various agencies within local government -- triggered the latest search for a dead man in Pasadena. In a tragedy unlike any other in the department's history, Lance Kerwin was mauled by an unknown animal. The killing is believed to be related to a dog walking contest that took place shortly before Kerwin's disappearance on November 3. The CHP did not find Kerwin until days after his return from Ireland where he had a fall over a ladder.

Lance Kerwin, 45, was last seen alive in Loma Prieta. At no time have the Riverside County Sheriff's Department, Los Angeles County coroner's office, National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC), Los Angeles Police Department, Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), Department of Ambulatory Surgery and a host of other agencies conducted an investigation. State Director Scott Jenkins said: "Our goal was to be thorough in the analysis of all the available information, but now we're going to be much more thorough when working closely with authorities outside the department." For the past week, officers have been looking for the most recent sighting of Lance Kerwin or any evidence of a possible relationship between the man and the dog. Initially, it was thought that Lance would take his own life. Several members of a larger family group gave the information to the local sheriff's Department who began an investigation. They hope that answers are found once they identify the body. The coroner's report will be made public later this month.

"This is a horrible case," said Ellen Mayorga, who heads the Pasadena-Northridge Behavioral Analysis Unit. Mayorga spoke to reporters in court today. "The best way to describe it is really horrific." She told reporters that she was assured by personnel in Pasadena that there was no possibility of finding a cause of death. "The best I can say right now is that it could be a veterinarian's bill," she said. "My question is if the victim had pets or was involved in a petting zoo?... If there were any medical issues, somebody knows about it.
