Indigestion Blemish Is Mostly the Trickle-Stomach Disease that Drives You Back to Peanut Butter as a Dieter (Cory Atkin) The trickle-stomach syndrome (H. pylori) is the most common peptic gastritis and the first diagnosed cause of peptic ulcers in the United States. It is caused by the bacterium H. pylori, a spiral-shaped bacterium that resides along the base of the stomach. Once inside, this bacterial blob attaches to and grows into clumps from which it can invade the lining of the stomach. Eventually, it forms a blood-filled stomach sac which then develops into a ulcer. Many people infected with H. pylori can remain asymptomatic or have limited symptoms for years, but there are at least six types of flus related to the bacterium. Currently, there is no cure for H. pylori. Doctors now prefer to use a cocktail of prescription medications called proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) to prevent the development of the condition. PPI therapy was approved for use in 2002. This treatment includes omeprazole, pantoprazole, lansoprazole, and rabeprazole. Atypical dyspepsia is the usual term for what we now often refer to as H. pylori-related gastroesophageal reflux disease. In 1998, H. pylori was suspected to be a risk factor for heart disease. In 2007, scientists detected an association between stomach ulcers and H. pylori. Their reasons for thinking this were two-fold: (1) Proton Pump Activity Index (PPIA): a measure of acid production on the upper GI system, both the stomach and esophagus, was reduced in patients with ulcers; and (2) a genetic variant that affects the _helicase_ gene, an enzyme involved in making the protein that helps H. pylori adhere to cells, was found to be associated with gastric mucosal inflammation and subsequent ulcers. A 2004 review described "remarkable correlations" between gastroduodenal ulcers and H. pylori eradication. But since that review, newer studies have not replicated those findings. Overwhelmingly, the strongest evidence connecting H.
