John McCain was the only Republican Senator to break party rank when he came out in favor of gay marriage in 2009, but his official spokeswoman, Mary Ann Fain, seemed to take the high ground in a public statement. “This issue has no place in the United States Senate,” Mary Ann Fain said, calling the question “a dangerous distraction and a distraction from the vast work that should go on every day in Washington.” With the exception of a few lunacy statements from President Obama, many of whose religious beliefs run so deep that they would seem to disqualify him from holding public office, I believe that there certainly is some level of balance necessary between the way the country moves forward and the things it wants to do differently. But there may well be an even greater chance for balance as new ideas come to the fore, or old beliefs get battered. Having said that, McCain definitely has more conservative colleagues in the House, who are likely to stand up to Obama where he is trying to rush through a gay rights bill.
