Kelce Rant

The white, rocky island of Balisavia lies in the middle of the Bay of Kocaeli. The capital of Western Thrace province is once of great significance with archaeological sites rich in remains of prehistoric settlements. It’s a breathtaking place with fine views of the Blue Mountains and was only in 1930 when it became the home of Bulgarian War Hero Dimitar Stefanov. The commander turned WWII victim was captured while crossing from Bulgaria into Serbia during a cease-fire after World War II.

Today he is a prominent figure on the Balkan Vardar landscape and a prominent local politician. Dimitar served several years in a military prison before having his hands secured by Serbian guards to bring him out. His crime? Desecrating Serb lands around the Byzantine city of Dairrdara.

Western Thrace

Also in 1930, a political party was set up in Belgrade. The first public meeting was held in June of that year, later moving to Sofia in July (World Book Encyclopedia). During World War II another political party, the Union of Primates, was formed.

Primatologists believe that the founding members of the political party were Prime Minister Nikolay Vedernikov, Deputy Premier Boris Georgievski and Politburo member Nikola Sekeritsa. Today, the Primatologists belong to the “Organization for Promoting Unity of Political Movements”, a non-profit organization. The Group is called Bulgaria’s third largest political party and has an electoral college as large as the 5th largest. One of the group leaders is former deputy prime minister Petro Stoilov who resigned because of a party corruption scandal.

The Government in 1970, under the leadership of Dimitar, again saved Western Thrace’s last independent prewar settlement, the Mesta Monastery, from financial ruin. After the end of World War II it was restored to the state.

Western Thrace province

After the liberation of Western Thrace in 1944–45 the Principality came to an end. In 1962, its lands were returned to Bulgaria. The region adopted a Bulgarian autonomy code and politics remained in the hands of the Serbs. By this time, the war prisoners were treated very poorly by Bulgarian authorities. It was only through outside intervention that they eventually opened up to Western Thrace’s original inhabitants.
