Ruth Bader Ginsburg Statue
WASHINGTON (Newser) - While the real-life figure has a less impressive speech impediment than her older brothers, Carrie is bringing social media fans a more compelling — and possibly less creepy — opportunity to forget their previous night's insomnia and catch an early train. Her forthcoming TV debut is on the cable network FX.
Ginsburg, 89, was accused of "anti-semitism and anti-Zionism" after she delivered a stirring performance at a pro-Israel event in 1999. The first name that comes to mind about her performance is Laura Dern, the actress who played Princess Diana. But the most famous part comes for Ginsburg, when, in a brief speech at a graduation party, she refused to shake hands with some of her parents, saying that it was not necessary because "I will die with my hands in the air." She later apologized.
The real Ruth Ginsburg loved working on Supreme Court cases, and despite an abundance of unpleasant physical comedy, she used these moments to make everyone around her feel like a part of the body politic. And when she was criticized for it, Ginsburg made sure to apologize, too. From CNN:
She sent copies of her 1993 speech to every family member at Princeton, and called her father to explain why the girls were not allowed to visit while the ceremony was going on.
"Dear Dad," Ginsberg said, "because I couldn't stay unless it was purely done with respect for the tradition of justice. You gave me my nickname. I miss it, but it gets better. I'll be back.
