Blogger Debbie Sarvis Duxbury: My story includes news from the middle of our new world. My family is from Yorkshire, England, and in the mid-1980s my mother came to live with us and we moved to Germany. At first we lived in East Berlin, then in Wurzburg, Baden-Württemberg. In 2014 I returned to the UK after working in Poland and Germany.

I decided to write a blog that’s by all accounts entertaining and informative with good use of graphics and photos. I also like to share experiences with the friends and family who read my blog. There’s more to tell, including memories of growing up with different religions, my hopes and concerns for making the world a better place, and so on. Stories matter – they make us grow up, blossom and shine. I hope you find this interesting and inspiring.

Welcome to Debbie’s World! I can hear your name. That’s Deborah Sarvis.

Debbie, welcome back to Debbie’s World! I am Debbie Sarvis Duxbury, and I’m a Northern Vlady with my first name meaning God in Latin. Who would have believed it? My accent got thicker as I got older, and I began to feel uncomfortable when the people I lived with could not speak English. Some of their greetings were, “Hello, how are you?” or “Are you enjoying India?” and I felt confused. I thought I was the only Indian in Germany, that I couldn’t understand German, and that somehow I had a strange feeling about being with European society. Can you believe I was born in Delhi in 1989? Yeah, guess what? It’s hot and humid now, and every day there’s rain… never seems to be enough! I’ve lived in Germany for three months now, and I still don’t know what to call myself. However, I think I’m too Westernized to identify as a Hindu!!

On my journey here I’ve told my family and friends (in their own language), even though they prefer English. My parents, Anne (Anne) and David Duxbury, taught me English at school in Zips and now wish I hadn’t.
